Mouth to Lung vs Direct to Lung Vaping

If you’re new to vaping or looking to switch your device, you may have already heard that there are two ways to inhale your vape. In this blog, we’re going to dig deeper and take a closer look at both mouth to lung (MTL) and direct to lung (DTL) vaping. After reading this, you’ll be able to decide for yourself which is best for yourself, or at the very least have a greater understanding on the possible ways to vape!

MOUTH TO LUNG

With MTL vaping, you inhale the vapour into your mouth first, once collected you then breathe into your lungs. Cigarette smokers will be most used to this action as it is the common way cigarette smoke is inhaled; Due to smokers having to suck in the smoke from a cigarette through a filter, this is the best way to inhale adequate smoke and air.

DIRECT TO LUNG

Unlike that of MTL, DTL vaping is similar to breathing air normally. With DTL you inhale the vapour directly into your lungs, without holding it in your mouth first like MTL. For this reason DTL can be seen to provide a more powerful and satisfying vape than MTL, however most people don’t vape like this when beginning with vaping, but this form of inhaling has become more popular over recent years due to the increase in ‘cloud chasing’ and hobby vaping.

MTL E-LIQUIDS

For the most part, MTL vapers use an e-liquid with a high PG (propylene glycol) ratio such as 60% PG and 40% VG (Vegetable Glycerine). The reason for this is to provide a reasonable throat hit alongside satisfactory flavour. Another reason higher PG percentage are used is that they are generally thinner and do not clog up your coil, as apposed to a higher VG percentage that could clog up a regular coil. Due to commonly having a higher nicotine content, MTL e-liquids tend to come in 10ml bottles.

MTL NICOTINE STRENGTHS

Nicotine strengths for MTL depends on your needs and preferences. If you have recently quit smoking (well done if you have!) and you were a heavy smoker, you’ll need a stronger nicotine level. However higher levels of nicotine are best used via MTL and not DTL.

DTL ELIQUIDS

As highlighted earlier, when vaping via DTL, using an e-liquid with a higher VG is strongly recommended. By using a higher VG, you will have a smoother vape which will create more vapour, which also limits the throat hit to make for a pleasant all round vape. Most commonly used VG/PG ratios are 70VG:30PG and 80VG:20PG.

DTL NICOTINE STRENGTHS

Unlike MTL vaping, nicotine strengths should be carefully considered through DTL. Due to DTL providing a lot more vapour per inhale, you’ll get a lot more e-liquid and nicotine. Not only can high levels of nicotine cause an overpowering throat hit, you can also overdose on nicotine which you obviously want to avoid! For this reason, it is recommended to use very low nicotine level such as 0.3% or 0.6% and can also be used with great satisfaction at 0% nicotine. DTL e-liquids generally come within a ‘shortfill’ bottle, although they are known to come in various other bottle sizes.

SALT NICOTINE

In addition to the e-liquid nicotine outlined earlier (freebase nicotine), a great amount of advancement in the vaping industry has brought us a new type of nicotine, Nicotine Salts (Nic Salts).

To outline, nic salt is the type of nicotine found in leaves of tobacco. In addition to nicotine, nic salts also contain various organic components. Due to these additional components, nic salts are absorbed into the body quicker and can generate a quicker nicotine fix, nicotine salts can be used at a higher nicotine level without the unpleasant throat hit found in stronger freebase nicotine e-liquids.

The reason we mention salt nicotine here is due to the way you inhale (vape) it. It is strongly advised to vape salt nicotine through conventional MTL and not via DTL due to the nicotine levels being substantially higher. Why not try nic salts today, we have over 100 flavours to choose from!

MTL COILS AND DEVICES

Carrying on from earlier, MTL vape batteries and mods require less power as opposed to DTL hardware. For the most part, MTL tanks are designed to take coils with a higher resistance so you shouldn’t have to worry too much. We offer a great selection of MTL coils and devices with numerous MTL starter kits to get you started such as the Aspire Pockex!

DTL COILS AND DEVICES

For DTL, you’re going to need a little more power than the devices used for MTL. In addition, you’re going to need a tank which offers great airflow to give you a more air induced vape. Along with these requirements, you are also going to need a coil with low resistance. To briefly cover ohms law, the lower the resistance of the coil, the higher the power you’ll be able to generate and in turn you’ll produce more vapour.

There’s no need to worry too much if you’re new to DTL as there are a wide range of devices available on the market which are available to use straight out the box without having to ensure you have all the correct pieces to put together! We offer a wide range of Sub Ohm Kits to either get you started or taking your vaping journey to the next level, such as the Aegis Mini Kit by Geekvape.

KEY NOTES: We’ve covered the fundamentals in this post and you should now hopefully have a greater understanding of the difference between MTL and DTL. Find below a quick recap of what you’ve learnt today.

Mouth to Lung (MTL)

- Great for new vapers
- Can use higher nicotine
- Less cloud production
- Best with higher PG levels
- Better flavour generally
- Low-wattage device
- Higher ohm coil

Direct to Lung (DTL)

-Larger cloud production
-Best with higher VG levels
-Great with no nicotine
-Doesn’t feel like a cigarette
-Used with sub-ohm setups
-Lower nicotine level strongly recommended
-Advance technique however getting easier
